Ikea’s Swedish Meatballs




IKEA’S SWEDISH MEATBALLS

1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2/3 lb lean ground beef
1/3 lb ground lean pork
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 cup milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying)

1 (10 ounce) can beef gravy
1/2 cup 10% cream

1 Saute onions in first tablespoon of oil until translucent. Set aside and let cool.
2 Combine breadcrumbs and milk, let soak for 10 minutes.
3 In a large bowl, combine onions, breadcrumbs, milk egg, meat and seasonings. Mix thoroughly. Form tablespoon of the meat mixture into balls.
4 Over medium heat, fry meatballs in second tablespoon of oil until brown on all sides.
5 In a small saucepan, combine gravy and cream; heat through but do not boil.
6 Serve meatballs with gravy, boiled potatoes and lingonberry preserves.

I had been craving these meatballs for like a month, and so I finally just looked up a recipe online and made them. I’ve only had them once at Ikea and it was like 2 years ago, so I can’t remember exactly what they taste like, so I can’t compare how close the two are, but this recipe was EXCELLENT!! I also read the comments that came with the recipe and they said to use half the milk, so I did too and that went well! I also added some nutmeg to mine and that was good too! I also used a packaged Swedish meatball gravy packet, and I liked that too! Also, I couldn't find the lingonberry preserves so we had boysenberry preserves--those were delicious with them!! Mmmmm....I have some leftovers in the freezer, maybe we will have them again tomorrow!! For the original recipe go here.

We have Swedish night every December 13 (Festival of Lights) as my family is part Swedish. You can use cranberry sauce for the lingonberry jam. Love these meatballs.
